Blues appoint Carla Ward as Head Coach

Carla Ward, Birmingham City Women Head Coach

Birmingham City Women have appointed Carla Ward as their new Head Coach some five months after previous boss Marta Tejedor left the Club by mutual consent. Blues have taken their time to appoint someone but the consensus amongst fans is they are delighted with the choice of manager.

Ward comes with a very impressive record of her time at Sheffield United where they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Women’s Super League. In fact, last season, Sheffield United only missed out on promotion as a result of just one game! Like Aston Villa they were unbeaten all season with the exception of having lost twice to Aston Villa and so were six points behind them. However, Sheffield United’s goal difference was superior to Villa’s so if they had won just one of those games against Villa then United would have been top on points per game basis when the season was curtailed.

Overall, Carla Ward’s statistics in her coaching career make very impressive reading…

58 games, 34 wins, 141 goals.

If she can bring just a fraction of this success to Blues Women then I’m sure the Club and the fans will both be delighted.

However, Ward is keeping her feet very much on the ground at the moment as she recognises Blues have a mammoth task ahead of them. The most pressing thing to attend to is recruitment of players. Currently, Birmingham only have 11 registered first team players but ideally they’re going to need at least another 7 players to create a more competitive squad.

The season starts 3 weeks today so hopefully we’re going to see an influx of quality players before the transfer deadline closes on September 10th.
