Blues v Everton FA Cup Match Review

Three days after Blues triumphant FA Cup quarter final victory over Brighton, Blues were in action in their semi-final match against Everton. Many questioned the logic of playing such an important game after with such short preparation time but it would have been the same for both sides.

Birmingham were forced into a change at the back with Everton loanee Georgia Brougham being ineligible to play against her parent club. In came Academy player Gemma Lawley for her first team debut teaming up with the highly experienced Rachel Corsie.

Blues started brightly with Lucy Whipp providing a great cross but Harriet Scott was unable to convert the chance. Everton pressured at the other end but Whipp was on hand to block out in front of the line.

Blues did well to hold out for 44 minutes but unfortunately the pressure from Everton finally broke and they took the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Blues went in search of an equaliser in the second half with Lucy Whipp again in the action with a half-volley which was saved by Everton goalkeeper Sandy McIver. Everton then added a second goal and Blues hearts dropped, finding it hard to get back into the game.

Everton added a third just before the final whistle and deservedly went through to the FA Cup final to be played at Wembley Stadium. However, Blues will take heart that after just 4 games they are holding their own against one of the top teams in the WSL.

Blues Women Fans PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Lucy Whipp – Lucy was effective at both ends for Blues in creating chances and defending the back line against a strong Everton side.
