Gemma spent her youth career playing for Birmingham City Regional Talent Squad before advancing to the Academy U21 side. In September 2020, Gemma made her debut for the BCFC first team in September 2020 playing the full 90 minutes in the match against Everton in the semi-final of the FA Cup.
She has since played against Blackburn and Leicester in the Conti Cup and West Ham and Arsenal in the WSL. Lawley mainly plays as a centre back alongside either Rachel Corsie or Georgia Brougham.
