Sarah Mayling fans

GENERAL

Women’s football is very different to men’s. The players engage with the fans a lot more. Sarah is a great believer that football fans deserve recognition.

For most away games fans often have to travel 100+ miles each way and are typically giving up 8 to 10 hours of their day. Therefore they feel really appreciated when the players come over to talk to them especially after an away game.

Sarah says she always tries to give back to the fans. She really appreciates the support she receives from the fans and the fans really appreciate Sarah being so friendly and taking the time to talk after games and in the clubhouse. It’s a great relationship that works both ways.

In general, as can happen with all players, some fans can build a stronger connection and enjoy meeting up socially. You see this up and down the country with many players, fans, families and friends. We’re all part of the same community.

Football without fans is nothing

FOOTBALL WITHOUT FANS IS NOTHING

Sponsors, advertisers and TV companies will not invest if there are no fans. If a football club doesn’t have any fans then it won’t have any money. If it doesn’t have any money then it simply no longer exists as a football club. Without fans is football is nothing.

1. What are your first memories of playing football?

My first team I played for was Holly Lane, when I was 7 or 8 years old. It was a boys team, me and my best friend Lauren played for them. I wanted to be a tennis player but they said I needed to work on my footwork so I took up football and ended up excelling so I quit tennis.

Aston Villa. I've had a season ticket forever.

Mayling is confident goals are coming

“I think we dominated the ball throughout the game and had a couple of chances to score, including mine,” said Mayling.

“It came off Abbi (Grant)’s heel, I should have done better and hit corners because it went straight at the keeper. Next time I get a chance I hope to bury it.

“We were disappointed but overall we played well, better than the last game against Everton so we move on to the next one. Hopefully we can start scoring and picking up points.”

Versatile midfielder Sarah Mayling pens a new contract

Congratulations Sarah, how do you feel about signing a new contract?

Thank you, I am very happy. I know I have more to learn and give to this club and I want to do it here. I am so excited for the future.

What are your reasons for staying – with the league growing, more teams becoming competitive and wanting other team’s players – why did you choose Blues?

The league is growing and getting bigger and better which can only be a good thing for us in England. Blues is a great team to be part of. You can see from our performance this year; we are pushing for the Champions League. Yes we haven’t quite achieved our goal this year but we have the players to achieve it next season. This is the best club for me to continue to learn and I can’t wait for next season.

You’ve played in different places this season, has your position changed?

I’ve played at right wing and central midfield but right back is mainly my new position. I like to think I bring something different when defending as I’m quite attacking. I’ve still got a lot to learn in all of the positions I play in but I am happy to play wherever.
